Editorial: List of acceptable Lt. Gov choices for Brownback a short one

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Editorial:

Conservative Kansans are hoping that Brownback chooses boldly as he makes major appointments over the coming 18 months.  One of the first will be the choosing of his running mate.  There’s little doubt that Brownback will pick a pro-life person as Lt. Governor, but there is a large amount of doubt about whether that person will be a fiscal conservative, and whether he or she will be a leader.

Many expect that Brownback will pick a Johnson County legislator as his running-mate.  That’s a bit troubling, because the number of economic conservatives is so small.  In the Senate, there are Jeff Colyer and Mary Pilcher Cook.  In the House, there are Anthony Brown, Lance Kinzer, Mike Kiegerl, Ray Merrick, Rob Olson, Arlen Siegfreid, and Kevin Yoder.

Some other Republicans are indeed pro-life, but are otherwise unreliable.  Kansas would be better off with Brownback choosing Topeka pro-choice, economic conservative Lana Gordon — or even former Democratic Rep. Candy Ruff — before choosing Sen. Karin Brownlee, a nice woman who unfortunately spends and taxes like a Democrat, or Sen. Julia Lynn, whom few conservatives trust.

In many ways, it comes down to how Brownback defines “conservative.”  If Brownback defines the GOP Congress of 2000 to 2006 as good-government, reform-minded conservatives, then we’ve got a big problem in Kansas.

A look at endorsements for JCCC candidates

Saturday, April 4th, 2009

The Star looks at the endorsements for JCCC candidates:

Ben Hodge, who is seeking another term on the board, has garnered the endorsements of two conservative lawmakers_ House Majority Leader Ray Merrick, a Stilwell Republican, and Rep. Mike Kiegerl, an Olathe Republican.

Hodge is well known among conservative activists and is expected to get a lot of support from conservative, pro-life voters. He also has the endorsement of Kansans for Life, although it is doubtful the board of trustees will ever vote on an abortion issue.

The faculty association at the college has endorsed four candidates, Melody Rayl, Peter Jouras, Stephanie Sharp and Bob Drummond.

The Kansas City Star recently endorsed Rayl, Jouras, Sharp and Miguel Morales.

The faculty association may be having second thoughts about Drummond. They are concerned about reports that he referred to homosexuality as a disorder and that as a member of the Olathe School Board he supported the removal of the book “Annie on My Mind” from school libraries.

Hodge is also endorsed by The Gardner News and Hope for America Coalition’s Steve Shute.

Ray Merrick endorses Hodge for JCCC Board

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

From Benjamin Hodge:

This week, Kansas House Majority Leader Ray Merrick (R-Stilwell) recognized Benjamin Hodge’s pro-growth, pro-taxpayer voting record by endorsing Hodge for re-election to the Johnson County Community College Board of Trustees.

Hodge served in the Kansas House from 2006 to 2008 and is running for his second four-year term as JCCC Trustee.

Merrick has represented Kansas House District 27 since 2000 and was first elected Majority Leader in 2006.
