Source: Leawood Mayor Peggy Dunn on Brownback “short list” of choices for Lieutenant Governor

According to a source, Senator Sam Brownback’s 2010 team is privately telling Kansas conservatives that Leawood Mayor Peggy Dunn is on the “short list” of choices for Brownback’s running mate.  The source thinks that Brownback wants to appoint a woman and a Johnson County resident.  If true, Brownback’s consideration of Dunn will likely be viewed by many conservatives as further evidence of the concern that Brownback is out of touch with conservative voters. Peggy and Terry Dunn are the 2009 Johnson Countians of the Year

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — Peggy and Terry Dunn, Leawood, have been named by the Johnson County Community College Foundation as the Johnson Countians of the Year for 2009.

The Dunns will be honored at the Foundation’s 23rd annual Some Enchanted Evening gala Nov. 14, 2009, at the Overland Park Marriott Hotel. Proceeds from the event support student scholarships at JCCC. Over the past 23 years, the Foundation has raised more than $3.9 million for the college’s scholarship program through Some Enchanted Evening.

“Terry and Peggy Dunn are twin pillars of our community,” said Bob Regnier, president and CEO, Bank of Blue Valley, and president, JCCC Foundation. “Their contributions in the business, municipal, civic and charitable arenas have made a permanent imprint on the quality of life within the Kansas City metropolitan area.”

Peggy Dunn is mayor of Leawood and serves on the Johnson/Wyandotte Counties Council of Mayors. She is the board chairman of the United Way of Greater Kansas City and serves or has served on the boards of many organizations, including the Johnson County Community College Foundation, the Leawood Chamber of Commerce, the Salvation Army, Starlight Theatre, St. Luke’s South Hospital, Children’s Mercy Hospital, Truman Medical Center, the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation, the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, the Francis Family Foundation and the Union Station.

Her recent honors and awards include the 2007 JCRB/AJC Henry W. Bloch Human Relations Award, the 2007 Boy Scouts of America Heart of America Council Silver Beaver Award, the 2006 Mid-Continent Council of Girl Scouts C3 Award and the 2006 United Community Services Distinguished Public Service Award.

Terry Dunn joined J.E. Dunn in 1974 as contracts officer and was made vice president and treasurer in 1978. He was promoted to senior vice president in 1979, executive vice president in 1980 and president in 1986 and served as chief executive officer from 1989 to 2005. He is currently the president and chief executive officer of J.E. Dunn Construction Group Inc., the holding company for J.E. Dunn Construction Company and other affiliates across the nation.

He has been active in all facets of the business with extensive experience in construction operations.

Terry Dunn is the current chairman of the Civic Council of Greater Kansas City and director and vice chairman of the Kansas City Industrial Foundation. He is a board member and past chairman of the Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce. He also serves on the board of many organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America Heart of America Council and National Boy Scout Board, H & R Block Bank, Kansas City Southern, the Midwest Research Institute, Rockhurst University, St. Luke’s Hospital and UMB Financial Corp.

He also is past chairman of the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City, Heart of America United Way, Bloch School of Business Advisory Council, Crittenton Center, the Learning Exchange, Missouri Colleges Fund Inc. and Rockhurst University. He received the 2003 Silver Buffalo Award and is a chieftain in the Tribe of Mic-O-Say.

The Dunns have had a long relationship with Some Enchanted Evening. In 2005, they served co-chairs of the event. In 1995, Terry Dunn’s father, William, was named Johnson Countian of the Year.

“Peggy and Terry Dunn are two of the college’s most valued friends,” said Terry A. Calaway, president, JCCC. “Over the years they have served the community and college in countless ways. When you review their contributions to the community, it is easy to see why they are our Johnson Countians of the Year for 2009.”

Through events like Some Enchanted Evening, the JCCC Foundation has helped thousands of students pursue their dreams of a college education. Students with exceptional needs, such as single parents and displaced workers, and talented students in all areas of study benefit from Foundation scholarships. The Johnson Countian of the Year award is the Foundation’s highest recognition of achievement and is presented at Some Enchanted Evening, a black-tie event that includes a gourmet dinner, entertainment and dancing.
