City of Shawnee – Acting Fire Chief John Mattox Announced
City Manager Carol Gonzales has announced the appointment of John Mattox as
Acting Fire Chief. This appointment will be effective September 17, 2011,
following the retirement of Fire Chief Jeff Hudson. Mr. Mattox is currently
the Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal of the Shawnee Fire Department.
Chief Mattox started his career in the fire service as a volunteer with the
Edwardsville, Kansas Fire Department in 1979. He became a full time
firefighter in 1986 and was promoted to the rank of Captain in 1987.
Another promotion to the rank of Assistant Fire Chief followed in 2000.
Mattox joined the Shawnee Fire Department in 2001 as the Fire Marshal. In
2009, the Fire Marshal position was reclassified to included duties
associated with a Deputy Fire Chief.
Chief Mattox holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Management and Human Relations
from Mid America Nazarene University and is currently completing the
Certified Public Manager (CPM) course through the University of Kansas. He
is scheduled to graduate in November 2011. Chief Mattox is very active in
professional organizations. He currently serves as the President of the
Kansas Chapter of the International Association of Arson Investigators and
is the past Chairman of the Eastern Kansas Multi-County Arson Task Force,
as well as a long time member of the Fire Marshals Association of Kansas.
John and his wife, Tracy, live in Shawnee.
