Professional Development Days preview: Teaching and learning

At JCCC, we change lives through learning, and seven of the January Professional Development Days sessions are all about teaching and learning.

All Professional Development Days sessions are 50 minutes in length unless otherwise indicated; some may require registration through MyJCCC. If so, the CRN is provided.

Mark these sessions on your January calendar:

· Math Resource Center tutor in-service: 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, CLB 212. Get together with the other math tutors to learn about changes in math coursework and the resource center, and to discuss good pedagogy.

· New adjunct faculty orientation: 6 – 8 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 13, RC 101 C and D. Tom Grady leads this orientation open to all new adjunct faculty.

· College Now: accountability, inclusion and innovation: 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, RC 157. Since College Now was accredited in 2006, the program has become recognized nationally as an exceptional Concurrent Enrollment Partnership program. Come learn more about College Now at JCCC, the only accredited Concurrent Enrollment Partnership program in Kansas.

· 4MAT Awareness Workshop: 9 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, GEB 264. Christine Buta leads this interactive session that introduces faculty to natural cycle of learning as a vehicle to honor learner diversity while increasing learner involvement and understanding of content. Registration required; you may register through MyJCCC using CRN 30398.

· Applying the rubric QM training: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, LIB 373. This course will review the QM rubric and its use in evaluating online courses. It’s intended for faculty, instructional designers, administrators and adjunct instructors who wish to understand more about the QM process and aspire to become peer reviewers.

· A fresh look at honors contracts: 10 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, CC 212. This session will look at honors contracts and how to keep them fresh and interesting for both students and faculty. It includes examples of student work and guest students sharing information about their most rewarding contracts.

· Adjunct connections: Protocols for responding to parents: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 18, GEB 213. Irene Schmidt and Pete Belk lead this session on the lines between student rights and parental rights, FERPA and College Now students. They’ll share the resources available to adjuncts and how adjuncts can better communicate with admissions and counseling.
