Johnson County Gov’t – Meeting Synopsis 6/10/10

M E E T I N G S Y N O P S I S

-June 10, 2010-

The Board of County Commissioners yesterday presented a Certificate of Special Commendation to Louise Hunter, Chief Deputy in the Department of Records and Tax Administration, for her more than 58 years of public service, including 49 consecutive years, to County Government. All of her years of service have been in the County Clerk’s Office. The office became the Department of Records and Tax Administration in 2005. She started in the County Clerk’s Office in 1950 and worked as a payroll clerk. She assumed the position of Chief Deputy on April 1, 1978. She has worked for seven County Clerks. When she started, the County Clerk served as the Election Commissioner and the Appraiser, prepared the county budget, managed the county payroll, and processed all expenditures for the county. The Clerk even paid the bounty for coyote ears. Her retirement becomes effective on Friday, June 12.

The Board also presented a Certificate of Special Commendation to Peter “Pete” Malone for 35 years with the Park and Recreation District as the head coach with the Kansas City Blazers Swim Team. His career as a swimming coach spans 42 years. In all, five Olympians, with three winning gold medals, along with elite national competitors, collegiate swimmers, and scores of top high school performers, have passed through the Blazers’ system. The team ranks in the top 10 in the nation, top 50 in the world, and has set national age group records. His retirement also becomes effective on June 12.

The Board approved a request from Phelps Engineering, Inc., applicant for William Southerland, landowner, for a preliminary and final development plan (plat) for eight residential lots and one tract on four acres located at 162nd Terrace and Kenneth Road. Known as Villas of River Ridge Farms, the site is zoned Planned Residential Urban Single-Family 1B District.

Finally, in other action, the Board:

· Proclaimed June 17, 2010, as National Dump the Pump Day and June 15, 2010, as World Elder Abuse Awareness Day; and,

· Approved the May 20, 2010, business session minutes.
