Arts Council scholarships available to high school seniors

Graduating high school seniors who live in Lenexa are invited to apply for the 2010 Lenexa Arts Council scholarships by March 1.

Given out each year to area seniors, the scholarships are split into visual and performing arts categories. Submissions are due by March 1 and applications are available at Lenexa City Hall and Community Center.

The scholarships are for high school seniors who live in Lenexa and are graduating this year with plans to attend college in the fall. Winning students will be recognized at a reception April 20, which includes a presentation to the Lenexa City Council.

A select committee of judges from the Johnson County art community will review submissions and make recommendations to the Arts Council on allocating the scholarship monies. Scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the Arts Council, and are paid directly to the winning students’ colleges and/or universities.

For the visual arts scholarship, students should complete the application form and submit it, two samples of original, signed artwork, two letters of recommendation and a biography or resume.

Performing art students need to submit a six- to 10-minute performance or compilation of performances on VHS or DVD. While others may appear in the video, the performance should be primarily solo.

Eligible visual arts include painting, drawing, sculpture, weaving, photography, jewelry making, printmaking and clay/pottery. Applicable performing arts are singing, instrumental performance, dancing and acting/oral interpretation.

Entries must be mailed or delivered to: Lenexa Arts Council Scholarships, Lenexa Community Center – attn. Debbie O’Connor, 13420 Oak, Lenexa, Kan., 66215.
