Notes From Funk’s Front Porch
Funk’s Front Porch
11 December 2009
Dear Folks,
This Week’s City Business
On Wednesday, the Mayor went to the airport to welcome area military families who were participating in the Snowball Express Program.
The Snowball Express is a volunteer, not-for-profit organization that arranges all-expense-paid trips to provide hope and new memories for the children and spouses of military men and women who have given their lives in defense of our nation. The trip, sponsored by American Airlines, is taking 1,300 spouses and children of fallen military personnel to Dallas, Texas, for a week of entertainment from December 9-13.
The Mayor told the assembled group that it is far too easy to forget that we have brave men and women who are across the globe that are fighting to preserve our way of life. He said that as Mayor, the least that he could do was to let the surviving families know that Kansas City is grateful and supportive, and more importantly, that we will never forget the immense sacrifices they made for the people of this country.
The Mayor has many expired board seats that he wants to fill with new blood. He is looking to find residents who share in his vision and goals for the city: Restoring professionalism and financial stability to city government and begin the creation of a city that works. If you would like to help the Mayor create a City That Works for all residents, please peruse the 75 or so boards and apply for the seat that would best suit your interests or abilities: http://cityclerk.kcmo.org/liveweb/Boards/Boards.aspx.
On A More Personal Note
Ever since Funk took office, it has been a frequent occurrence to have important family occasions sneak up on us. And this year is no different. In this month alone, our daughter will return home from graduate school, after being away for a total of 5 ½ years, Christmas and all the holiday entails, including the writing of our annual Christmas letter, is just around the corner, and, of course, so is our New Year’s Day party. We keep saying that we’re going to do better, but here it is, the 11th of the month, and we’ve done nothing to prepare for any of these events. Funk and I have always known that, if you want a rich family life, then politics is not for those with young families. So we are grateful that he waited to pursue this field until our children were grown enough to pitch in and help make our special occasions continue to be wonderful.
