Politico – Tiarht, Moran “trying to out-Gitmo each other”

Without much daylight between them on the issues, Kansas Republican Reps. Jerry Moran and Todd Tiahrt have seized on a novel theme in the state’s GOP Senate primary: They are trying to out-Gitmo each other.

It’s a unique but logical pursuit for the two competing congressmen, who are seeking the state’s open Senate seat in 2010.

When the White House announced earlier this year that it was planning to close down the Guantanamo Bay detention facility, word circulated quickly in Kansas that the Fort Leavenworth detention barracks were a likely home for the detainees. In May, hundreds packed a local community center for a meeting on the issue scheduled by Republican Sen. Pat Roberts.

Tiahrt and Moran – neither of whom presently represents the area around Fort Leavenworth – didn’t hesitate to voice their opposition to the idea of bringing suspected terrorists to the heartland.
