Woman dies of meningitis after returning from trip with students: The Star

A 58-year-old Lenexa woman died Monday after returning Sunday from a trip to a Mexican resort where she was accompanying a group of students from Shawnee Mission West High School.

Mary Jo Allen, a developer, contracted bacterial meningitis, an infection of the fluid around the spinal cord that ultimately surround the brain. The Johnson County Health Department said the symptoms range from fever, headache and a stiff neck to more severe symptoms such as confusion or seizures.
